Customized manual Barkhausen noise stands are grinding burn and heat treatment defect detection systems for low-volume applications.

Customized manual BN stands are designed for quality control needs of small to medium sized parts. Systems can be designed for various shapes and sizes.

  • Helps operator to keep steady contact between the sensor and part to be measured when all the movements are operated manually.
  • Can be placed next to production line for sample test and optimizing manufacturing process or in testing laboratory for material study.

These manual BN stands can be customized to meet the specifications within your operation. When defining the system, the following system features need to be specified: measurement style, sensor style and sample alignment.

Available features:

Measurement style

  • Static: in static measurement both sensor and sample stay still during the data collection.
  • Scan: in scanning measurement the sensor or the sample is moved while data is collected.

Sample alignment

Sample holders help to move sample so that sensor measures correct area and/or holders keep the sample still when sample movements are not wanted.

Sensor style

System can be equipped with 1-2 sensors.


  • To move the sensor away when loading the sample
  • To measure different sample sizes
  • To move the sensor while measuring


  • Fixed sensors are normally placed under the system or behind the system so that sample can be moved on top of the sensor in front of the sensor.

Barkhausen noise sensor:

Area to be measured defines size and shape of the Barkhausen noise sensor. System is equipped with appropriate sensor.


  • ViewScan: ViewScan is a data plotter for collecting and analyzing Barkhausen noise measurement data.


  • MicroScan: MicroScan is a signal analysis tool to analyze Barkhausen noise burst features.

Example systems

Example 1: Face stand

Face stand is designed for manually measuring the face surfaces of cam lobes with the Barkhausen noise analysis. The system features are:

  • One self-aligning sensor, which tilts freely inside the sensor fixture so that it positions correctly on different samples.
  • Vertical linear guide with a spring keeps the sensor fixture in upright position. For the measurement, the sensor fixture is manually pushed downwards with the handle.
  • Two separate sample holders:
    • Cylinder shaped holder for the cam lobe center hole keeps the sample centered in the position.
    • V-block holder for the cam lobe nose prevents sample rotation during the measurement. V-block can be moved away by pulling away gently, allowing the cam lobe to be manually rotated.

Example 2: Face stand

Gear face stand is designed for manually measuring the face surfaces of gears with the Barkhausen noise analysis. The system features are:

  • One sensor fixed to sensor fixture. Sensor alignment is adjusted with the adjustment screws.
  • Vertical linear guide along which sensor fixture moves freely. The sensor fixture can be locked to upright position with the locking knob. When measuring, the sensor lays on the sample without need of any assistance.
  • Hollow cylinder sample holder, inside which the part to be measured is placed. Sample holder can be manually rotated to move sample during measurement.

Example 3: ID stand

ID stand is designed for manually measuring the ID surfaces of housings with the Barkhausen noise analysis. The system features are:

  • One sensor fixed to sensor fixture. Sensor alignment is adjusted with the adjustment screws. There is a handle fixed to the sensor fixture for moving the fixture along the linear guides.
  • Two linear guides where the sensor fixture can be moved horizontally and vertically. For the horizontal linear guide there is a stopper with a measure to set the sensor depth inside the sample.
  • V-block sample bed for housings with different diameters. It possible to rotate the sample on the v-block, or sample can be hold manually steady while the sensor is moved.

Example 4: U-joint stand

U-joint stand is a system for controlling the quality of the bearing surfaces of universal joints (U-joints). The system features are:

  • Two sensor measures simultaneously.
  • The part to be measured is rotated manually on top of the sensors.
  • Two spring-loaded sample holders ensure good contact between sensor and the part.
  • The rightmost sensor carrier can be moved along the guide rail by rotating the wheel so that universal joints of different sizes can be measured with the stand.
  • Two horizontal sample positioners help to measure same position for each U-joint.
